Description

The leaves of Damiana steep into an infusion that is amber and softly aromatic, with a slightly bitter, herbaceous taste that lingers warmly on the palate. Native to the subtropics of Central and South America and parts of Africa, Damiana (Turnera diffusa) has been brewed for centuries. Spanish missionaries recorded its use among Indigenous peoples, who valued it as an aphrodisiac and a gentle, uplifting tonic. To prepare, steep two tablespoons of leaf in half a litre of just-boiled water, covered, for around ten minutes. Caffeine-free, it makes a quiet, grounding cup to enjoy slowly at O Cais or to carry home.
